In this study we report that serum galectin-3, a biomarker of fibrosis and inflammation, is associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in subjects with long standing type 1 diabetes.

The cohort consists of 295 subjects with clinical examination and blood samples from 2002-2003. They were diagnosed with childhood-onset type 1 diabetes before the age of 15 years in the time period 1973 – 1982, and followed up to end of December 2017. Mean time of diabetes duration was 38.4 years and 40 subjects had a documented event of CHD during mean follow-up time of 14.4 years (range 0.5 – 16.0).

This is the first published study of galectin-3 and future CHD in subjects with T1D.
